The New South Wales Government has approved a plan to build the state's first commercial solar farm at Nyngan, in western NSW.
The $300 million development is a joint venture between Infigen Energy and Suntech Australia. Fifty-five jobs will be created during construction and the project will provide five full-time positions.

Australia's renewable energy certificate scheme has been restructured to overcome the decline in the market. The new scheme, which commences on 5 January 2011, will differentiate between large and small producers of renewable energy. The revamped scheme will benefit producers of wind energy, such as Infigen Energy and AGL Energy.

EnergyAustralia has contracted Ericsson to supply, initially, WiMAX equipment to support a WIMAX network for its smart grid rollout, but says it will later upgrade this to LTE. The network will connect some 150 EnergyAustralia sites in Sydney, Central Coast and Hunter and will transmit data between 12,000 smart monitoring devices, up to 3,000 mobile field computers and 200 major zone substations. EnergyAustralia's Smart Grid, Smart City project covers five locations: Newcastle, Scone, Ku-ring-gai, Newington and Sydney CBD.

It’s been a big day for energy company IT with both AGL Energy and Verve Energy announcing multi year, multi million dollar deals with outsourcers.
Tata Consultancy Services has secured a five year contract worth $50m to provide infrastructure management for AGL Energy. Australiasian GM, Varun Kapur, said work would be conducted with software company BMC. He said the AGL contract alone required the attention of 650 staff. They are engaging 20 or more new employees to service the ANZ region every month and are working towards a target of 40% locally based staff.
West Australia based Verve meanwhile has signed with Fujitsu on a three year deal which has Fujitsu managing Verve’s IT service desk.

The price of renewable energy certificates has plunged in recent weeks as the privatisation of NSW’s electricity retailers has prevented them making purchases, threatening the viability of large-scale projects such as wind farms. In the fortnight to last Friday, the renewable energy certificate (REC) spot price dropped from close to $40 to below $34. The contract price also dropped, which developers said could force project delays.
