A funny thing happened to cloud computing over the last few years: Though everyone talked about cloud computing, the demand for cloud skills was healthy but not overwhelming, and certainly not in sync with the hype -- until now. The demand for cloud talent has officially caught up to the hype. Hiring demand increased by 61 percent year over year for cloud-savvy IT people.

Diverse sectors of the telco industry are rallying to combat an escalating skills shortage, forecast to worsen in the coming months and years – with the notable exception of NBN Co, which has a backlog of applicants for jobs not yet created yet.

The federal government's $36 billion plan to wire up the nation to high-speed broadband cleared one of its last major hurdles today when Telstra agreed to an $11 billion deal to rent its infrastructure to the operator of the state-owned network.

NBN Co has named a clutch of recruitment companies to help with its hirings - an estimated 1000 in the next 12 months. They were chosen from over 300 hopefuls following what it says was a comprehensive tender process.

The National Broadband Network Company (NBN Co) will now be subject to freedom of information (FOI) laws after a successful negotiation between the Greens and the government, Greens Party Communications Spokesperson Scott Ludlam announced today.
The Greens and the Opposition have been critical of the exemption that allowed NBN Co to be exempt from FOI laws despite being government-owned because it is an incorporated company. Other government-owned entities such as Medicare or Australia Post are not exempt.

NBN Co is considering an option that would allow users to attach an extra optical network terminal (ONT) to their house, effectively expanding the number of service providers they could use.
