Big projects demand telecom skills

TELECOMS may become the sector of choice for highly skilled technical candidates, with the National Broadband Network proving a major drawcard, recruiters say.

TELECOMS may become the sector of choice for highly skilled technical candidates, with the National Broadband Network proving a major drawcard, recruiters say.

With the appeal of the finance sector taking a hit in the past few years, telecommunications, driven by the NBN, is highly favoured.

The huge infrastructure project was very exciting, "and certainly they don't have trouble attracting high-calibre candidates out of the industry", Launch Recruitment managing director Rebecca Wallace said.

Launch Recruitment, an NBN-preferred recruitment supplier, has been enlisted to recruit niche policy, regulation and fibre design roles for the $36 billion project.

Most NBN recruitment would be done by the construction partners and vendors.

NBN Co itself employs about 1000 staff and the construction partners will employ 16,000- 18,000.

Ms Wallace said some carriers were investing in school leavers and universities to ensure graduates knew how attractive the telecommunications industry was.

"In the past they have been not as active in that generation, and certainly now they are putting a lot of effort into ensuring that young people understand the advantages of the industry," she said.
